Questions

Hedge & Shrub Trimming FAQ

Updated October 24, 2026

When should I prune lilacs?

Right after they finish blooming, usually in late May or June in the Champlain Valley. Pruning later cuts off next year's flower buds.

Can overgrown shrubs be cut back hard?

Many deciduous shrubs bounce back from a hard rejuvenation cut in late winter or early spring. Most evergreens, including arborvitae, don't regrow from bare wood, so they should only be trimmed lightly.
