Questions
Tree & Shrub Planting FAQ
Updated October 24, 2026
Do deer eat arborvitae in Vermont?
Yes, and often badly in winter, when deer rely on evergreen boughs. UVM Extension recommends a 5- to 6-foot fence closely circling each plant or netting over shrubs, and 8 to 12 feet of fencing for larger areas. 'Green Giant' arborvitae is more deer resistant, though it's rated only to zone 5 and doesn't like road salt.
How far apart should arborvitae be planted?
It depends on the variety. Narrow types like 'Emerald Green' are often planted about 3 to 4 feet apart when you want them to grow into a hedge, while wide, fast growers like 'Green Giant' need more room. We'll space them for the variety you choose.
Do newly planted trees need watering?
Yes. New trees and shrubs need regular deep watering through their first season, more in dry spells, until their roots grow out into the surrounding soil.
Do you supply the plants?
Tell us what you have in mind when you call or text (802) 503-4865, and we'll go over plant options.
