Questions

Mulching FAQ

Updated October 24, 2026

How deep should mulch be?

UVM Extension says no more than 2 to 4 inches deep, kept at least 3 inches away from the trunk's root flare. For mature trees, UVM's "3-3-3" rule is a handy check: at least 3 inches from the trunk, no more than 3 inches deep, in a ring at least 3 feet across.

What is volcano mulching, and why is it bad?

Volcano mulching is piling mulch high against a tree trunk. It traps moisture against the bark, invites decay, insects and disease, can cause girdling roots, and gives voles cover to chew the trunk. Mulch should be spread wide and kept at least 3 inches from the trunk.

How much mulch do I need?

Multiply the bed area in square feet by the depth in inches, then divide by 324. That gives cubic yards. For example, 300 square feet at 3 inches deep needs about 2.8 cubic yards.
